Effect of irradiation temperature on irradiation-induced lattice parameter change in ThO2-base fuels (JRR-2, VOF-18H capsule)

Description

Effect of irradiation temperature on irradiation-induced lattice parameter changes in ThO2-base fuels was investigated by an instrumented capsule irradiation at high temperatures (300 ∼ 500 deg C). The lattice parameter growth in (Th,U)O2 decreased with the increase of the irradiation temperature. The behavior of the postirradiation recovery suggested that the starting temperature of the recovery is made higher by the high temperature irradiation. Addition of CaO, Y2O3 and Nb2O5 in ThO2 would enhance the irradiation recovery and the increase of the starting temperature. The effect of the irradiation temperature was also discussed by comparing with data for room temperature irradiation. (author)
