Phlebography of the lower limbs. Comparative study of iopromide 370 and ioxaglate 320 mgI/ml

Twenty patients received an injection of either iopromide 370 (10 patients) a new nonionic contrast medium, or ioxaglate 320 (10 patients) the ionic low osmolar contrast medium, in a randomized prospective trial, for phlebography of the lower limbs. A concentration of 320 mgI/ml is prescribed (more often) than 370 mgI/ml for this examination in France, where a concentration of about 300 mgI/ml is recommended. We decided to compare iopromide 370 because in some clinical situations (varicose veins, very tall patients...) this concentration may be necessary. This study demonstrates the good safety of iopromide 370, comparable to ioxaglate 320 mgI/ml, in spite of its higher concentration
Abstract (French)
Une etude clinique prospective randomisee double aveugle a ete menee en 1987 sur 20 patients. Dix ont recu l'ioxaglate 320 mgI/ml et 10 de l'iopromide 370 pour une phlebographie des membres inferieurs. La concentration choisie pour le produit non ionique, iopromide 370 mgI/ml, superieure a ce qui est habituellement employe, avait pour but d'en tester la tolerance par rapport a un produit de reference. En effet, certaines indications rares de phlebographies avec des dilutions attendues importantes (varices, patients de tres grande taille) peuvent necessiter l'emploi de ces concentrations.
