This paper presents the first stage of an environmental impact research programme named: 'Possibilities of environment rehabilitation in the Jiu Valley (Romania)'. This research takes account of pollution sources of soil, water and air, as well as their impact on flora, fauna and population health in this region. In research development the authors emphasise mining activity and its adjacent activities; they are the most important economic activity in the Jiu Valley and the most important pollution source in this area. 3 refs., 4 figs., 4 tabs
