Concerning the mechanism of two-photon absorption by Nd3+ ions in YAG and YLF crystals within the region 1.06 μm

Calculation is carried out of cross-sections of the two-photon absorption (TPA) by Nd3+ ions in YAG and YLF crystals within the region 1.06 μm. It is shown that the experimental data are in a good agreement with the general theory accounting for the TPA polarization characteristics and effects (for YAG crystals) of surrounding ligands on the TPA mechanism. It is also found that the lowest Stark component of the Cramers doublet of the Nd3+ ground level in YLF does not correspond to the symmetry type of that one which has been suggested earlier in works of other authors. In the final analysis the new identification is given
