Highlights: • The first reported experimental study of plutonium dioxide powders contaminated with hydrogen chloride. • Stabilisation of PuO2 by thermal treatment – desorption of water and chloride. • Scanning Electron Microscope images of PuO2 powders. • Lattice parameter and crystallite size measurements of PuO2 samples by Powder X-ray diffraction. • Underpinning a new treatment plant design at Sellafield to stabilise legacy plutonium materials for safe long term storage.
