Irradiation facility for temperature transient and cycling experiments of HTR fuel elements

  • 1. Commission of the European Communities, Petten (Netherlands). Joint Nuclear Research Center

Description

Accident analysis of High Temperature Reactor (HTR) spherical fuel elements is focussed on investigation of temperature transient conditions after failure of the main heat sinks, either at system pressure or after depressurization, under different fuelling schemes, e.g. single pass (OTTO) or multiple pass (Modul-HTR). JRC Petten has developed an irradiation facility to simulate temperature transients for HTR fuel elements under realistic operating conditions with simultaneous analysis of gaseous fission product release rates. Typical transient parameters range to about 16000C within 100 hours. The tests can be performed under steady nuclear conditions. The irradiation facility covers requirements for power ramp tests. This paper describes the irradiation facility and presents a thermal analysis for early and late in life case studies. (Auth.)
