The presence of plutonium and hot particles in human lungs as a result of the Chernobylsk NPP accident
Description
Physico-chemical state, content and distribution of hot particles in samples from Gomel and Mogilev regions (40-250 km from Chernobylsk NPP) have been determined. The radiographic method for registration of gamma- and beta-emitting nuclides has been used. The results indicate that the distribution is typical for each of 7 fractions studied (from 1000 to 5 μm) and do not depend on soil type and remoteness from the source. The finest (<10μ) particles contain maximum amount of 90Sr, 106Ru and 144Ce. The nuclide composition of the hot particles varies essentially - there are particles rich in ruthenium, cerium and cesium. It is found that the concentration and distribution of the hot particles in the near-ground soil level contribute to its intake in human organism. The study of 200 lung tissue samples of people from various regions, died from different diseases, indicate that the hot particles are located mainly in upper lung lobes. The amount of hot particles found in lungs in 1990-1991 is considerably less than that in 1987-1988, which is a consequence of the Chernobyl accident. A reliable correlation between the content of hot particles in soil, air and lungs of people from contaminated territory of Belarus is established. Distribution and accumulation of plutonium as a fission product is observed in the human organism. (author)
