X-ray or sonography - at the example of the mesotheliomen

Description
The primary method to present the mesothelioma is always the X-ray picture. The differential-diagnostical spectrum, however, is very wide. Sonography and computerized tomography can help to see the regions around the mesothelioma better. Thus, a large number of differential-diagnostical possibilities can be excluded. None of these methods, however, is able to substitute a histological definition. This is only possible by using effusion cytology, closed or open biopsy. (MG)
Abstract (German)
Beim Mesotheliom ist die primaere Darstellungsmethode stets die Roentgenuebersichts-Aufnahme. Das differentialdiagnostische Spektrum ist jedoch sehr breit. Sonographie und Computertomographie koennen dazu beitragen, die Regionen besser auszuleuchten, in denen das Mesotheliom angesiedelt ist. Auf diese Weise koennen eine Vielzahl von differentialdiagnostischen Moeglichkeiten ausgeschlossen werden. Keine dieser Methoden ist jedoch in der Lage, eine histologische Absicherung zu ersetzen. Dies ist nur durch Ergusszytologie, geschlossen oder offene Biopsie moeglich. (MG)Additional details
