Interstellar extinction for two regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud from the S2/68 sky-survey telescope

  • 1. Royal Observatory, Edinburgh (UK)

Description

Absolute surface brightness measurements in four wavebands centred on 2740, 2350, 1950 and 1550 A have been obtained from S2/68 observations for regions around 30 Doradus and the H II region Henize 144 in the LMC, and for a comparison region around NGC 346 in the SMC. The colours constructed from the surface brightness observations of the two LMC regions have been compared with those computed from the observed luminosity function for this part of the LMC, and with those observed for the comparison region in the SMC in order to derive the colour excesses. Since the ultraviolet colour excesses derived from area integrated colours are affected by light scattered by dust, a simple dust model has been used to estimate the contribution of the scattered light in order to derive the interstellar extinction law for these regions of the LMC.
