Description

In this paper merits and demerits of the natural circulation BWR are considered from the characteristics required for next generation of LWRs as compared with current BWRs. Next, a thermo-hydraulic instability, which may appear during start-up and greatly influences concept feasibility, is investigated experimentally under conditions simulating normal and abnormal start-up processes. Finally, a flow diode is proposed to implement the pump coastdown characteristics of the ABWR and to switch smoothly over to natural circulation after the occurrence of a pump trip transient. The characteristics required for the flow diode are clarified by investigating transient aspects of natural circulation after a pump trip
