Energy characteristics of interactions between π--mesons with 50 GeV/c and nuclei

  • 1. Joint Inst. for Nuclear Research, Dubna (USSR)

Description

In the paper analyzed are momentum and angular characteristics of secondary particles in inelastic interactions of π--mesons at momentum p0=50 GeV/c with photoemulsion nuclei in a strong magnetic field. The experiment was carried out with the ''Mamont'' facility on Serpukhov accelerator. Stacks of nuclear emulsions of the BR-2 type were irradiated by π--meson beam with the following characteristics: intensity approximately 7x105 particles pulse, momentum p0=50 GeV/c, Δp0/p0 approximately 1%, transverse dimensions 30x20 mm. The average effective magnetic field was 180 koe. 340 inelastic interactions were analyzed. The mean relative error of measuring the secondary particle momenta accounted for 10-20 % depending on the momentum. Analysis of different one-particle distributions versus the number of heavily ionising particles was carried out. The average transverse momenta of π- and π+ mesons and fractions of the energy taken by these particles slightly depend on dimensions of the nucleous-target or on the number of nucleons in a target. In pion-nuclear collisions the effect of leading particle inherent in an elementary event retains. However the hypothesis about its total passivity contradicts the experimental data
