Possibility of incorporating high-level wastes in ceramic matrices based on natural rocks

Description
Samples of silicate mineral ceramics of various compositions based on composites of granites, unconditioned apatite ores, tailings from enrichment of apatite ores, and model radioactive wastes are synthesized and studied. The rates at which Na+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Cs+ are leached by H2O at room temperature from the ceramics are measured. The silicate metalloceramic surpasses borosilicate glass in retention of alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Several composites rival the ceramic SYNROC in reliability of Cs immobilization
