Description

In the present paper, the safety assessment of a disposal practice proposal for a relevant amount of ashes coming from the electric generation in Cuba is evaluated. This waste type, is classified as hazardous, therefore, their disposal should fulfil the national and international defined requirements. The adopted safety assessment methodology, allowed to identify and select the scenarios to evaluate and the mathematical model to apply. Taking into account conservative criteria, the carried out assessment included the evaluation of the risks associated with all waste components such as heavy metals (Vanadium, Chromium, Zinc, etc.) and long lived radionuclides (226Ra, 224Ra). The results shown that the Vanadium is the most important component in the assessment, allowing reject the risk associated to the others heavy metals. The obtained concentration values for the Vanadium are below the established limits according national and international standards, for the scenarios of dispersion to the atmosphere and release to an aquifer. For the main radionuclides companion of Vanadium in the wastes, was evaluated their radiological impact according the defined scenarios. The doses never overcome the limits for the members of the public and the most important radionuclide was the 226Ra. According to the obtained results the evaluated practice is a safety disposal for the isolation, of the evaluated wastes, from the environment and the man
