Precision measurement of the relative decay rate of the long-lived neutral K meson into two neutral or charged pions
Description
The theoretical fundamentals of the experiments, the experimental layout of spark wire chambers and lead glass Cherenkov counters, the selection of the reconstructed events, their kinematical analysis, and the measuring principle are described in detail. The results are 1.00 +- 0.06 for ratio between the branching ratios A[K0(L) → π0π0]/A[K0(S) → π0π0] and A[K0(L) → π+π-]/A[K0(S) → π+π-], and 7.60 +- 180 for the respective phase. These amplitudes and phases are expected in cases where a CP-invariant admixture in the long-lived neutral K-meson is the main reason for the CP invariance. (BJ/AK)

Die theoretischen Grundlagen des Experimentes, der experimentelle Aufbau von Drahtfunkenkammern und Bleiglas-Cherenkovzaehler, die Auswahl der rekonstruierten Ereignisse, ihre kinematische Analyse und das Messprinzip werden im Detail beschrieben. Die Ergebnisse sind 1,00 +- 0,06 fuer den Betrag des Verhaeltnisses zwischen den Verzweigungsverhaeltnissen A[K0(L) → π0π0]/A[K0(S) → π0π0] undA[K0(L) → π+π-]/A[K0(S) → π+π-] und 7,60 +- 180 fuer die zugehoerige Phase. Diese Amplituden und Phasen werden erwartet, wenn eine CP-verletzende Beimischung im langlebigen neutralen K-Meson die Hauptquelle der CP-Verletzung ist. (BJ)
