XPS studies of Ru cluster deposited on α-Al2O3 single crystal

Description
X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of Ru cluster deposited by e-beam in Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) on synthetic sapphire single crystal are reported. Extra bands observed in the O-1s and Al-2p XPS spectra are interpreted as initial state effects due to a point charge electrostatic field present in the Al2O3 lattice. The origin of this potential is attributed to F centers surrounding the Ru cluster and generated by the migration of O atoms from the lattice to the metal. A general assessment of the agreement of this model with experiments shows it to be quite satisfactory
