Neutron absorbing control rods

Description

Purpose: To prevent tritium from leaking to the outside of neutron absorbers by incorporating tritium capturing materials to the neutron adsorbers per se sealed in hollow tubes. Constitution: Borosilicate glass rods incorporated with tritium capturing material as neutron absorbers are charged in a fuel can made of zircaloy and both ends of the fuel can are tightly sealed by welding upper and lower end plugs respectively. The tritium capturing material usable herein includes metal or alloy of U, Ti, Zr, Nb, Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co, Ni, Rh, Pb, Pt, etc., alone or in admixture. This enables to capture tritium at the inside of the neutron absorbers per se and avoid the risk of contamination. (Takahashi, M.)
