Role of hydrocolloid dressing in the treatment of radiation skin reactions in breast cancer patients

The aggressive use of chemotherapy in conjunction with radiation therapy and with some treatment regimens requiring high skin doses leads to a higher frequency of moist desquamation. Many patients with breast carcinoma fall into this category. Since June 1984 the authors treated 42 women with severe skin reactions with hydrocolloid dressing (Duoderm Hydroactive Dressing, Convatec Squibb). Reepithelialization takes place more rapidly in a moist environment. Ideal dressings should relieve pain, promote healing, prevent infection, be well tolerated by the patient, be cost-effective, and, when removed should not damage newly formed skin.
