Highlights: ► Archives sources shed new light on discovery of superconductivity. ► For the first time the discovery of superconductivity has an exact date: 8 April 1911. ► The role of Gilles Holst in the discovery has been overestimated. -- Abstract: This review shows the history and the significance of the discovery of superconductivity in 1911, at temperatures just above absolute zero.
