Trade in radiation sources

The guide lays down the obligations pertaining to the trade in radiation sources, specifies the related safety licences and exemptions from the licence, as well as the requirements given in Council Regulation (Euratom) No. 1493/93 for shipments of radioactive substances between the Member States of the European Community. The guide also gives the obligations and procedures specified in Council Directive 92/3/Euratom pertaining shipments of radioactive waste into and out of Finland. The guide does not apply to nuclear materials (plutonium, uranium, thorium) or nuclear waste. Nuclear materials and nuclear waste are dealt with in the Finnish Nuclear Energy Act (990/1987) and regulations based on it. Neither does this Guide concern nuclear dual-purpose products (e.g. certain radiation sources emitting alpha radiation), nor the regulatory control of the export of such products. The provisions relating to such products are laid down in Council Regulation (EC) No. 3381/94 (Amendment 837/95) and in Council Decision 94/942/CFSP (latest Amendment 1999/93/CFSP). Moreover, this Guide does not apply to appliances that produce non-ionizing radiation, such as laser appliances, sunbeds, radar appliances, radio transmitters, microwave ovens or diathermy equipment
