Doses in radiation accidents investigated by chromosome aberration analysis: Pt. 19

Description

During the 3 years 1988-1990, 48 persons suspected of being overexposed to ionising radiation were referred to the National Radiological Protection Board for investigation by cytogenetic analysis. Of these, 32 were associated with industrial uses of radiation, 13 were from major nuclear organisations and 3 were from institutions of research, education or health. No evidence of radiation exposure, as indicated by dicentric chromosomal aberrations in blood lymphocytes, was found in 14 persons. With one exception the chromosomal aberration yields in the remainder were consistent with low doses, 12 being probably in the range 0-100 mGy which is below the statistical limit of reasonable accuracy for the technique. One person showed evidence of high exposure and this was accompanied by a burned hand. (author)
