Pion Characteristics in the fire-ball type of interactions at 70 GeV

  • 1. Presidency Coll., Calcutta (India). Dept. of Physics

Description

A precise search for fire-ball type of interactions has been made using photo-emulsion plates exposed to 70 Gev proton-beam at Serpukhov Accelerator at Dubna, USSR. It is observed that the frequency of occurrence of fire-balls at this primary energy is very small. Pions produced through these particular interactions are very nearly isotropic in nature regarding the Duller-Walker distribution and also the differential angular distribution. The authors have further arrived at the conclusion that the angular distribution of the pions in the CM system comes out to be a Gaussian. The average energy (Esub(i)) and the average transverse momentum ((Psub(t)sub(i)) have been found to be (0.770 ± 0.03) Gev and (0.562 ± 0.04) Gev/C respectively in the fire-ball rest system. The authors have moreover, evaluate the average values of mass (Msub(tb)) and the inelasticity coefficient (Ksub(tb)) of the fire-balls and the values obtained for (Msub(tb)) and (Ksub(tb)) are (4.70 ± 0.37) Gev/C9 and (0.51 + 0.03) respectively.
