Some reminiscences of the discovery of the neutron
Creators
Description
Some personal reminiscences are made by the author of the events, attitudes and personalities of those in Cambridge closely concerned with the discovery of the neutron in 1932. The author was at the time working at the Solar Physics Observatory on ion-counting by droplet counting in a cloud chamber. Using this method he looked for, but did not find, any tracks of the type expected if neutrons were emitted when beryllium was bombarded with alpha particles. Rutherford's attitude to this failure to find the expected electron tracks is reported. (UK)
