Magnetic field of a horizontal current above a conducting Earth

Creators

  • 1. Williams Coll., Williamstown, MA

Description

General formulas are derived for the magnetic field produced at the surface of a plane earth of uniform conductivity by a fluctuating primary current filament in the upper atmosphere. The results are expressed where possible in formulas amenable to hand calculation, and an image construction is given for use when the skin depth is small. Finally, a simple recipe permits fields to be calculated when the primary current is distributed in a horizontal band.
