Description
The dynamics of classical, two dimensional arrays of Josephson junctions is influenced strongly by the properties of the vortices. In small capacitance junctions the charging energy plays an important role. We present an effective description of Josephson junction arrays in the quantum regime in terms of vortices and charges. We derive several physical properties of quantum vortices, such as the vortex mass, the Aharonov-Casher effect of vortices moving around a charge, or the force on a vortex due to imposed currents.
