The KARMEN neutrino results
Description
The KARMEN collaboration is using a 60 t segmented organic scintillation calorimeter for observations of nuclear reactions induced by neutrinos νμ, νe and bar νμ from the pulsed spallation sources ISIS. Major physics aims are measurements of charged current as well as neutral current neutrino nucleus interactions on 12C with spectroscopic quality. Cross sections for the reactions 12C(νe,e-) 12Ng.s., 12C(νe,e-)X and 12C(ν,ν') 12C* (1+, 1; 15.1 MeV) are measured in the neutrino energy range up to 53 MeV. Using the pulse structure of the neutrino source together with the stringent nuclear signature a signal to background ratio of 50 to 1 was obtained for inverse β-decay to 12Ng.s.. The results of the experiment from its first three years of data taking are presented. Implications for specific weak couplings, nuclear form factors ν-e universality and neutrino oscillations νμ→νe and bar νμ→ bar νe will be discussed. The energy dependence of the measured CC and NC cross sections may be important information for later neutrino detectors under discussion
