ISABELLE: Brookhaven intersecting storage accelerators
Description
The thought on the colliding beams of protons has persisted in BNL since the early 1960s. Subsequently, the success of CERN ISR, etc. has suggested the possibility that the colliding proton beams of high energy should provide the next step upward in center-of-mass energy toward the point where weak interaction becomes strong. The study on the design of ISA, intersecting storage accelerators, nicknamed ISABELLE, has thus been in progress since 1971, with a number of alternate designs presented. It will use AGS as an injector and superconducting magnets. The final design has recently been attained. For the ISA, the following matters are described: lattice configuration, magnets, magnet power supply, injection, acceleration, vacuum system, experimental areas, and options. (Mori, K.)
