Longitudinal currents in the southern polar cap in the time of the strong northern component of the interplanetary magnetic field

Description

A system of longitudinal currents at BZ>>0 in the southern polar cap regenerated on the basis of terrestrial geomagnetic data is compared with the NBZ current system established according to the results of analysis of the MAGSAT satellite data. There is a good agreement between the structure and peculiar features of the NBZ system built up on the basis of the terrestrial and satellite data sets. The longitudinal current densities of the NBZ system calculated on the basis of the terrestrial data correspond in order of magnitude to the experimental measurements. The conclusion is made on the advantages of the method of ''scanning'' a polar cap by a meridian series of stations for revealing the structure and dynamics of three-dimensional current systems
