Obtaining high temperatures in the course of metal melting in suspended state in inert gas atmosphere

Description

It has been proved in the course of the investigation that additional heating of specimens suspended in the electromagnetic field by means of a plasmatron employing the same gas is possible for melting refractory metals and their compounds with a metalic electric conductivity under the inert gas pressure. During this method of heating the temperature rises up to 4000 deg C. When this method is used for melting transition metal carbides having an exclusively high melting point a provision has to be made for an excess of free carbon in the charge
