Radioactivity of human thyroids in the period May - August 1986. I

  • 1. Vyskumny Ustav Preventivneho Lekarstva, Bratislava (Czechoslovakia)

Description

416 thyroid glands were autopsied in Bratislava (CS) from 3 May to 4 Aug 1986 and the level of iodine 131 measured gamma spectrometrically. Regression analysis of daily intake of dose equivalents by the thyroids using a simple exponential model was used to estimate average dose equivalents for iodine-131 beta radiation as infinite integrals of regression functions. The comparison of the dose equivalents in the thyroids and corresponding data from other countries following emergencies showed similar values to those following the accidents in Windscale (1957) and in Three Mile Island (1979). The said accidents did not result in acute health damage of the population. (author). 15 figs., 4 tabs., 23 refs
