Description
The noble metal fission product ruthenium present in solutions resulting from the dissolution of spent Pu-rich nuclear fuels in nitric acid is in the form of nitro and nitrato complexes of nitrosyl ruthenium. The complex chemistry of ruthenium warrants to investigating the behaviour of ruthenium in the solvent extraction step in PUREX process and also in the waste treatment step. In the process of concentrating highly radioactive aqueous waste, ruthenium is oxidized partially to volatile tetroxide by nitric acid and escapes to the vapour phase. In the presence of cerium (IV) nitrate, quantitative oxidation of ruthenium to ruthenium tetroxide is favoured, which is extractable in paraffin oil
