Korea advanced nuclear energy system development. Requirements and strategy

  • 1. Korea Advanced Inst. of Science and Technology, Taejon (Korea, Republic of). Nuclear Engineering Dept.

Description

The requirements for Advanced Nuclear Energy System development in Korea are to improve safety, economics, environmental impact, and social acceptability compared to Korean Next Generation Reactor (KNGR) and to maximize nuclear fuel resource utilization. The target for such system is to commission first commercial unit around 2015. Since Korean R and D and industrial capabilities as well as resources are limited, viable reactor and fuel cycle development strategies have to be analyzed and various good options synthesized to suit for the national, regional, and global needs. Undoubtedly, most viable strategy would be through well balanced joint cooperations of bilateral, or multilateral nature depending upon the progressive stages of advanced nuclear energy system development.
