Neutronic method of soil moisture measurement

Description

The neutronic method is first outlined: analysis of neutron-nucleus interaction phenomena shows that the neutronic parameters of damp soils depend on the water itself, then on the dry density and the total chemical composition. A physical model representing the neutron moisture gage is worked out next, which leads to the establishment of a simple new mathematical expression applicable to two-dimensional geometry using the multigroup theory diffusion approximation. Following a brief description of the principle and technology of moisture gages two essential problems are dealt with: the calibration curve established by a quick and reliable method involving direct measurement of the thermal neutron constants of soils, and the measurement volume which must be approached by the use of a two-dimensional physical model to describe the geometrical conditions correctly. The problem of the vertical and horizontal resolution power of the neutron probe and the limiting case of surface measurements are discussed. Some possibilities offered by epithermal and fast neutron detection are suggested: epicadmic information represents a step forward as a complement to the thermal measurement since it supplies the principle of a moisture-gage independent of the dry density and allows the calibration curves of conventional instruments to be determined in situ. An experimental study of fast neutron space-energy distribution is described extended and specified by a physical model constructed on a Monte Carlo code; this gives the basis of a technique to measure water contents by fast neutron transmission.

Abstract (French)

On commence par un rappel des elements de la methode neutronique:l'analyse des phenomenes d'interaction neutron-noyau montre que les parametres neutroniques des sols humides dependent de l'eau elle-meme, puis de la densite seche et de la composition chimique totale. On elabore ensuite un modele physique de representation de l'humidimetre a neutrons, ce qui conduit a etablir une formulation mathematique simple et nouvelle en geometrie a deux dimensions dans l'approximation de la diffusion de la theorie multigroupe. Apres une breve description du principe et de la technologie des humidimetres, deux problemes essentiels sont abordes: la courbe d'etalonnage pour l'etablissement de laquelle on presente une methode rapide et sure a savoir la mesure directe des constantes neutroniques thermiques des sols, le volume de mesure dont l'approche necessite l'usage d'un modele physique a deux dimensions en vue d'expliciter correctement les conditions de geometrie. On traite le probleme du pouvoir de resolution vertical et horizontal de la sonde a neutrons, et le cas limite de la mesure en surface. On presente quelques propositions concernant les possibilites offertes par la detection des neutrons epithermiques et rapides: l'information epicadmique est un progres interessant comme complement de la mesure thermique, car elle fournit le principe d'un humidimetre independant de la densite seche et permet la determination in situ des pentes d'etalonnage des appareils classiques. On expose une etude experimentale de la repartition spatio-energetique des neutrons rapides, etendue et precisee par un modele physique construit sur un code Monte-Carlo; ceci nous donne les bases d'une technique de mesure des teneurs en eau par transmission de neutrons rapides.
