Energy level shifts in atoms near a metallic plane
Description
The vacuum fluctuations of the electric field will shift the energy levels of an atom near a neutral conducting plate. These shifts in Rydberg atoms are calculated. The resuls of Casimir and Polder are recovered in the limit where on ignores any permanent dipole moment in the atom. Numerical values for the shifts of the lowest levels are given. (Auth.)
