Reduction in the strength of graphite by radiolytic oxidation in carbon dioxide

Description

The changes observed in the strength of nuclear graphites as a function of weight loss due to radiolytic oxidation in carbon dioxide are presented. It is concluded that the changes are independent of both the graphite source and the inhibitor concentrations in the carbon dioxide and dependent only on the weight loss. The weight loss in moderator graphite as a function of coolant composition is estimated using both an empirical model and a more sophisticated multi-pore group model as a function of absorbed dose to the gas and combined with the strengthening effects due to fast neutron irradiation to show how relative strength depends upon coolant composition.
