The Permeability of Silicon Carbide Coatings to Fission Products

Description

The migration of fission products through the polycrystalline silicon carbide coatings of HTR fuel particles has been studied in laboratory experiments and the release coefficients related to the silicon carbide formation conditions. The ''optimum'' material is entirely satisfactory as the principal fission product barrier for first-generation power HTRs. In reactor service at very high temperature, on the other hand, the release of an unexpected isotope, Ag-110m, often predominates, and possible reasons for this are considered. (author)
