Chemotherapeuticals modifying radiation damage of normal and malignant tissues

Description

Discussed are some radioprotectives, radiosensitizers and cytostatics, their properties, effects and experiences from their use. The mechanisms of interaction between cytostatics and irradiation, and factors affecting the combined effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy are explained. The effects are listed of the combined therapy on intestinal crypt lesions, on the hemopoietic tissues and on the lungs. Cytostatics are not suitable for application immediately prior to and after irradiation because they may damage normal tissues. (M.D.). 1 fig., 2 tabs., 29 refs
