Exposure control strategy adopted during refurbishment of Rajasthan Atomic Power Station, Unit-2

Description
Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS) consists of two units of 220 MWe PHWR type of reactors having 306 horizontal coolant channels. The en masse coolant channel replacement (EMCCR) of RAPS-2 was a unique operation done on any Indian PHWR. Highly active in-core components removed were effectively contained in shielding flasks and disposed off at Solid Waste Management Plant (SWAMP). In view of very high intensity of non-uniform radiation field emanating from the channels, control of external exposures to the working personnel became the main focus of attraction during the entire campaign. Mock-up facilities were established and workers were trained and qualified for working in high active areas
