A comparison of the solid state photochemistry and electron beam chemistry of p-diethylaminobenzaldehyde diphenylhydrazone

Description
While p-diethylaminobenzaldehyde diphenylhydrazone(1) efficiently photoconverts to 1-phenyl-3-(4-diethylamino-1-phenyl)-1,3-indazole(2) with a quantum yield phi = 0.4 + -0.1, excitation by a high energy electron beam (175kV) induces very little chemistry. The G value for decomposition of (1) is <0.07; also, the products which are a result of the electron beam exposure differ from the photochemical products. A most likely cause of the extreme contrast between the u.v. and electron beam excitation is the ability of (1) to efficiently ionize and transport holes in the solid state. (author)
