Description
The Juelich and Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centers jointly completed a study of the construction of a spallation neutron source. On the basis of that study, the construction of such a plant is now being prepared in Juelich. It is to become the source of neutrons, protons, pions, myons and neutrinos with the highest flux for purposes of the physics and chemistry of condensed matter, molecular biology, medium energy physics, radiochemistry, radiotherapy, and materials research. The Federal Ministery for Research and Technology regards the erection of the SNS as a possibility to establish in the Federal Republic of Germany a center for neutron research of international standing and has encouraged the Juelich Nuclear Research Center to take the preparatory work to a stage where the final building decision can be taken in the course of 1985. The SNS is to enable a large number of scientists and engineers to work with one of the most modern large tools in Europe. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die Kernforschungsanlage Juelich und das Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe haben gemeinsam eine Studie fuer den Bau einer Spallationsquelle erstellt. Auf der Grundlage dieser Studie wird jetzt in Juelich der Bau einer solchen Anlage vorbereitet. Sie soll die flussstaerkste Quelle von Neutronen, Protonen, Pionen, Myonen und Neutrinos fuer Zwecke der Physik und Chemie der kondensierten Materie, der Molekularbiologie, der Mittelenergiephysik, der Radiochemie, der Strahlentherapie und der Materialforschung werden. Das Bundesforschungsministerium sieht im Bau der SNQ das Potential, in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ein bedeutendes Grundlagenforschungszentrum von internationalem Gewicht zu schaffen und hat die KFA ermutigt, die Vorarbeiten so voranzubringen, dass im Laufe des Jahres 1985 die endgueltige Bauentscheidung getroffen werden kann.
