Studies on ultraviolet-induced hemolysis of chicken erythrocytes
Description
Ultraviolet irradiation caused chicken erythrocytes to hemolyse in an isosmotic solution. All the erythrocytes studied in the same field under phase contrast microscope, appeared to hemolyse completely in approximately 5 hours. Prehemolytic swellings in erythrocytes were observed. In some erythrocytes, nucleus was pushed toward the cell membrane, and some local densities were noticed in the cytoplasm, before hemolysis. According to these characteristics, it is assumed that hemolysis of chicken erythrocytes might be colloid-osmotic in nature
