Description

The presence of bio markers such as ho panes in oil shales from the upper cretaceous Amman Formation of N W Jordan indicaters the presence of immature organic mater. This is also suggested by predominance of 17 trisnorneohopane over 18 hopane. Sterane s, which are traced by GC/MS at m/z = 217, indicate a source input of organic matter derived predominantly from higher marine organisms such as fich. Also, the relatively high proportion of sterance compounds shows that the palaeoenvironmet in which the formation was deposited was mainly estuarine to open marine. (authors)
