KM3NeT: Searching the Depths of the Sea for Elusive Neutrinos

Description

The sun alone produces more than 64 billion neutrinos per second and per cm2 that pass right through the Earth. These elementary particles of matter are everywhere, yet they remain almost entirely elusive. The key word is almost... The European infrastructure KM3NeT, currently being installed in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, has been designed to detect the extremely faint light generated by neutrino interactions in the water. Researcher Richard Dallier from IMT Atlantique offers insight on the major scientific and technical challenge of searching for neutrinos.

Abstract (French)

Rien qu'en provenance du soleil, ils sont plus de 64 milliards, par seconde et par cm2, a traverser la Terre de part en part. Les neutrinos, ces particules elementaires de la matiere, sont partout mais presque insaisissables. 'Presque': l'infrastructure europeenne KM3NeT, en cours d'installation dans les abysses mediterraneennes, est concue pour detecter la tres faible lumiere generee par les interactions des neutrinos dans l'eau. Retour avec le chercheur Richard Dallier d'IMT Atlantique sur la quete des neutrinos, un defi technique et scientifique majeur.
