Experimental investigation of the turbulent flow through a wall subchannel of a rod bundle

Description

An experimental investigation was performed to establish reliable information on the transport properties of turbulent flow through subchannels of rod bundles. Detailed data were measured of the distributions of the time-mean velocity, the turbulence intensities in all directions and, thus, the kinetic energy of turbulence, of the shear stresses in the directions normal and parallel to the walls, and of the wall shear stresses for a wall subchannel of a rod bundle of four rods in parallel. The pitch-to-diameter ratio of the rods equal to the wall-to-diameter ratio was 1.07, the Reynolds number of this investigation was Re = 8.7 x 104. On the basis of the data measured the eddy viscosities in the directions normal and parallel to the walls were calculated. Thus, detailed data of the eddy viscosities in direction parallel to the walls in rod bundels were obtained for the first time. The experimental results were compared with predictions by the VELASCO-code. There are considerable differences between calculated and measured data of the time-mean velocity and the wall shear stresses. Attempts to adjust the VELASCO-code against the measurements were not successful. The reasons of the discrepancies are discussed. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Um Informationen ueber die Transporteigenschaften turbulenter Stroemungen durch Unterkanaele von Stabbuendeln zu erhalten, wurde eine experimentelle Untersuchung durchgefuehrt. Detaillierte Messwerte ueber die Verteilungen der mittleren Stroemungsgeschwindigkeit, der Turbulenzintensitaeten in allen Richtungen und damit der kinetischen Energie der Turbulenz, sowie der Schubspannungen in Richtung senkrecht und parallel zu den Waenden und der Wandschubspannungen wurden fuer einen Wandkanal eines Stabbuendels aus vier parallelen Staeben gewonnen. Das Stababstandsverhaeltnis war gleich dem Wandabstandsverhaeltnis, es betrug 1,07, die Reynolds-Zahl bei der Untersuchung war Re = 8,7 x 104. Aus den Messwerten wurden die Wirbelviskositaeten in Richtung senkrecht und parallel zu den Waenden berechnet. Damit wurden erstmals detaillierte Messwerte fuer die Wirbelviskositaet parallel zur Wand in Stabbuendeln erhalten. Die Messergebnisse werden mit VELASCO-Rechenergebnissen verglichen. Hinsichtlich der Geschwindigkeits- und Wandschubspannungsverteilungen ergeben sich erhebliche Unterschiede. Eine Justierung des VELASCO-Codes an die neuen Messwerte verlief nicht erfolgreich; die Ursachen der Diskrepanzen zwischen Rechnung und Messung werden diskutiert. (orig.)
