To reduce the amount of long lived elements present in radioactive wastes to be stored, and thereby to reduce the potential noxiousness they represent, the CEA is performing researches on transmutation. The goal is to transform them into non-radioactive or shorter life cycle elements in fission reactors or by using accelerators
