Multivalued fields
Description
The statistical mechanics of line-like excitations of many-body systems can most easily be formulated with the help of multivalued fields which do not satisfy the Schwarz integrability conditions. These fields must be included into the hydrodynamic description of such systems in order to allow for a proper understanding of the observed phase transitions. We sketch the construction of the associated quantum field theory and its application to the phase transitions of superfluids, Bose-Einstein condensates, superconductors, crystals, and magnetic monopole gases.
