Environmental issues in thermal power generation

Creators

  • 1. Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi (India)

Description

Per capita consumption of energy, which has become one of the accepted indicators of the level of development, continues to be quite low in India implying that creation of additional capacity is inevitable in the years to come to meet the energy demand. The present trend of over 70% of the total electricity generated being contributed by coal based thermal plants will continue during the coming decades. The coal cycle clearly shows the need for stringent environmental control measures for sustainable development of the thermal power sector. Gaseous emissions and liquid effluents can lead to serious risks resulting in staggering economic loss accompanied by human misery. Environmental issues, therefore, need to be addressed seriously for ensuring a better quality of life for our citizens. (author)
