Development of a computational tool for the design of radioactive facilities in the medical area

Description
The present work aims to develop a computational tool for the design of radioactive facilities based on current regulations for radiodiagnosis, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine (NCRP Report No. 145, 147, 151 and AAPM task group 108) on the shielding of Radiodiagnosis facilities equipped with low-energy X-rays, Radiotherapy with accelerators high energy, positron emission tomography with PET-CT and rooms or collection box for Different radioisotopes. In recent years worldwide there has been an increase significant in requests for construction and operation authorization in all this type of facilities and in turn progressively appear technological advances that are associated with advanced techniques in different equipment in the medical area. As stated above it has been designed, developed and verified a computational tool called RAD DESIGN, programmed in MATLAB and based on the NCRP recommendations for the evaluation of radioactive facilities The computational tool allows the optimized design of a installation based on the entry of some input parameters and can also be used by regulatory bodies of each country to evaluate the design of the shielding of the facilities in the process authorization, based on the data contained in the project. The computational tool developed was validated with examples of the standards themselves and numerical simulations applying the Monte Carlo method.
