Description

With the development of ion beam neutralization techniques, it is possible to prepare and study metastable and hypervalent radicals that are difficult to generate by conventional methods. For a number of species examined over the past few years unexpected isotope effect on stability have been observed. The authors will discuss results from their laboratory for the H3/D3, NH4/ND4, H3O/D3O, H2F/D2f HNCH/DNCD isotopic pairs. Detailed information on the nature of the potential surfaces for metastables (i.e., H3O) that are thermodynamically unstable requires extensive theoretical analysis
