The presence of cobalt at WC/WC interfaces
Description
WC-WC boundaries in WC-Co type cemented carbides with 6-20 wt% Co were analysed with STEM/EDS and atom-probe. All boundaries were found to contain cobalt, localized to the boundary plane. The amount of cobalt corresponds to about half a monolayer only, so the boundaries can be described as grain boundaries with a cobalt segregation. In a material containing 0.5% of chromium carbide, some of the cobalt in the boundaries was replaced by chromium. The results support the skeleton model of WC-Co
