Determination of electron densities in atoms and molecules by electron diffraction

Description

A new high precision apparatus for the measurement of the total (elastic plus inelastic) differential cross section for the scattering of 40 keV electrons from gaseous targets was designed and constructed. The details of this apparatus which give rise to the higher precision are described in detail. Measurements have been made using neon, argon and nitrogen gases as the targets. The results are compared to various theories and the deviations of theory from experiment are discussed in terms of relativistic, electron correlation, and binding effects. The possibility of inversion of scattering data to obtain experimental electron-nuclear and electron-electron distribution functions is discussed
